ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Mapendo International is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and protecting at-risk refugees in Africa who have fallen through the cracks of humanitarian assistance. Steinfeld Communications [was enlisted, was hired] to launch publicity campaign for large two-night fundraiser. Main objectives were to attract as many [people to attend fundraiser, people as possible to attend] fundraiser, and maximize donations to Mapendo International.

  • Wrote press release and media advisory about upcoming fundraiser, created organization’s first press kit, and successfully pitched story ideas to newspapers and TV stations.

  • Met with Kitty Dukakis, conducted interview, and wrote article on her work, which was published in Hometown Weekly newspapers (5 towns).

  • Collaborated with Ms. Dukakis on her speech for the fundraising event.

  • Collaborated with Rose Mapendo, the United Nations Humanitarian of the Year, on her speech for the fundraising event.

What was accomplished:

1.

Media campaign on Mrs. Dukakis’s work on behalf of refugees led to a $100,000 donation to Mapendo.

2.

Press release, SC-produced press kit, and creative advocacy resulted in 3-page article that began on page 1 of The Boston Globe Metro section as well as articles in other news outlets.

3.

WHDH-TV (NBC affiliate) sent a crew to the fundraiser, filmed the event, and [broadcasted, aired] segments twice during prime time.

4.

The Boston Globe international reporter wrote a piece about Mapendo in his “Worldly World” blog.

5.

Public outreach campaign led to standing room only attendance at fundraiser for Mapendo International.
